5 Years - Cancer Free

Today marked a major milestone in our lives. My Mom is cancer-free. Breast Cancer...take that! While I am a girl who loves words, there just doesn't seem to be the correct words to express how thankful I am to have my Mom in my life today. Here are some pictures that I hope can help convey that...

What's been going on

Last week we took Miss C to her 15 month check up. She's 30.5 inches, 22 pounds and just all around doing well. Though she's a little on the light side weight wise the doctor assured us she her height/weight was in the 50 percentile.

Right now it's like she is honing the skills she has acquired over the last year. Now she isn't just babbling but she's actually using words we understand. Too many to count but enough for us to be able to effectively communicate with her. We spend a lot of time with her saying things like "cocker" for the dog and me saying "COP-PER". This has greatly decreased her us of sign language which was super helpful up to this point.

Other things she is doing is hugging and kissing with frequency. The kissing is new. The hugging is spectacular. I must admit if I could bottle that hug and save it for the day when she doesn't want to hug me because her friends are waiting, and come on MOM! I wanna go play you are so lame phase, I would.

Like her Mom she loves books and doesn't try to eat them like she used to. Now she sits with the books in front of her like she is reading. Those books with flaps that have "surprises" under the are her favorite. She laughs when she lifts the flaps to see what's underneath. We also think she is the smartest child on the planet because when we sit with her big book of pictures and say "where are the shoes?" she finds the shoes, "where is the dog?" she finds the dog, etc. So smart.

The other thing she loves to do is dance. Whenever there is music playing she'll bop her head side-to-side or kick her leg or twirl in circles. We sing and dance in the car on the ride home and it's hilarious to see her recognize a song she likes and start kicking her legs. The girl loves music and dancing.

Last night we took her to her first church picnic of the year. Here in Cincinnati they call the festivals but they will always be picnics to me. We drank a couple beers, played some pull tabs, hung out. It was nice. We rarely keep her up past her bed time but this was a nice exception.

Today she got to play with her new sand/water box thing that her Dad got her. She LOVED it. Of course she loved dumping the sand out of the box onto the deck which drove her Dad crazy but she totally enjoyed every second of it. I had the most difficult time getting the sand out of her hair though. I need to figure out a solution for that.

The thought did cross my mind

There have times since she's been born that I thought it made more sense to leave her in the car. I am sure that statement probably just freaked someone out, but let's be honest, I doubt I am the only person on the planet who has considered it.

The first time was when she was first born, it was pouring down rain, she was asleep and I needed formula. Formula. In and out in under 10 minutes. She would have stayed asleep and dry. The most recent time was this past weekend on my way to Louisville when I was in and out of the bathroom in less than 5 minutes but had to wake her to go. She could have continued to sleep, I could have used the bathroom and everything would have been ok.

But, it's not ok. It's very much frowned upon because too many times some moron left their kid in the car for too long to do something ridiculous like play blackjack at a casino, go on shopping sprees or drink at a bar. People with less sense have done far worse than my 5 minute pee break and because of that I have to wake up my child unnecessarily or expose her to a down pour so someone doesn't call the police on me.

The reality is, I would never leave her in the car for an extended period of time, in the heat or freezing cold or expose her to anything that was less than safe. But the thought has crossed my mind based on certain circumstances. Were this another time it wouldn't even be an issue but it is and it definitely complicates things.

Checking in

Yesterday we went to Sam's Graduation Party at Dad's. I cannot BELIEVE that the little boy whole stole my heart years ago is old enough to be going to high school. When I look at him sometimes I still see that little boy who used to crawl up in my lap and call me My Miss. I see in him so much potential and I will do whatever I can to see him achieve everything he wants to.

In addition to celebrating his big day, one of the highlights of my day yesterday was swimming with Miss C. Wow does she love water. I thought maybe now that she was a little more aware the vastness of the pool would freak her out...but it didn't. She is a fish.

We tried some different life jackets, swimmies, etc. and I think her second favorite was floating on her back while wearing the life jacket. Her favorite of course was not wearing any of these and sitting on the side of the pool counting to 3 then falling into my arms in the water. There is this part of me that thinks if we just let her go she'd just start swimming. Not likely, I know, but she is so comfortable in the pool.

Pictures to come.
